Indoors:
- Locate your master water shut off (stop and waste) valve and make sure it works properly. This will save water if a pipe burst
- Check and fix faucet and toilet leaks
- Run washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full
- Make sure aerators are on all faucets. (You can obtain these at the District office)
- Use water-efficient shower heads. (You can obtain these at the District office)
- Teach children to turn off faucets tightly
- Install low flow toilets. (BBCCSD has a rebate program that can assist you)
- Turn off water after wetting your toothbrush
- Turn off water while you shave
- When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with washing water and the other sink with rinsing water
Outdoors:
- Check and fix leaks on your irrigation system
- Try to install drip and bubbler systems for irrigation
- Make sure your irrigation system is not watering the house or street.
- Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps
- Try to water in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler
- Use a broom instead of the hose to clean sidewalks and driveways
- Check for leaking faucets and pipes and repair them immediately
- Divide your watering cycle into shorter periods to reduce runoff and allow for better absorption every time you water
- Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. Longer grass shades root systems and holds soil moisture better than a closely clipped lawn.
- Direct downspouts and other runoff towards shrubs and trees, or collect and use for your garden
